The San Francisco Giants is a Major League Baseball Team with a long and storied history. Their home, AT&T Park, has been called “baseball’s perfect address”. Since opening in 2000 the ballpark has become known as a landmark in a city of landmarks. It offers a unique and virtually unlimited array of creative options for education.
Provider's Events:
1. View Giants Geometry: The Shape of the Game - From little leagues to the major leagues, from colonial times to the twenty-first century, baseball holds a special place in American life. Students will utilize AT&T Park to identify and investigate the role that shapes play at the park and in the game. They will also gain a greater understanding of why baseball is considered our National Pastime.
The program begins with a video that takes students inside AT&T Park to learn about the history of the Giants waterfront home. They'll see unique footage of its construction, as well as experience the excitement of being at a Giants game. The lesson also explores the origins and evolution of home plate. Students will employ the appropriate mathematical formulas to calculate its total area. They will watch a video of two Junior Giants on a field trip to discover how home plate got its present shape. Students participate in a hands-on activity illustrating the importance triangles play in the structure of the ballpark.
The objective for this lesson is to to help students recognize and apply geometric ideas and relationships in everyday life. Participants will use visualization, spatial reasoning,and geometric modeling to solve problems.

2. View San Francisco Giants: Team Behind the Team - Have you ever thought about the team that stands behind the team, or wondered about all the jobs it takes so that a Major League Baseball team can take the field? The Giants employ up to 1,500 people on a game day, and the season doesn't end with the World Series. There are close to 200 people who work all year round to keep the organization going.
Students will view a short introductory video of AT&T Park followed by a brief background of some of the various departments that comprise the organization. (This information can be customized to include areas of specific interest to the audience.) A guest speaker will then tell of the experience and educational background that contributed to their current role with the Giants. They will also touch on their day to day responsibilities. A question and answer period will conclude the presentation.
