The Cleveland Institute of Music is a leading international conservatory that is distinguished by an exceptional degree of collaboration between students and teachers. This same stimulating environment extends to the Institute’s community education programs, which help people of all ages realize their full musical potential.
CIM offers many exciting distance learning programs for Pre-K through high school. These programs are informative, fun and highly interactive. In addition to a full array of programs and courses in music, CIM offers a series of interdisciplinary programs that address academic content standards in science, math, language arts, and history. These programs are designed to enliven and reinforce the academic core curriculum.
Distance learning programs at CIM connect in real time to teachers and students throughout the world through high-speed video conferencing technology. Videoconferences are complemented with in-class and web-based activities. In addition, special performances of classical music are offered as a community service and high-level master classes are offered for aspiring professional musicians.

1. View Spellers of Note - Learning to communicate through writing is a primary objective of elementary education. An excellent way to introduce vocabulary and its appropriate use is through sensory stimulation and direct experience. In this session, students will learn the rich vocabulary associated with the musical art through a multi-media montage of sounds, images and stories.
2. View Musical Geography of Ohio - This session focuses on the geography and people of Ohio. The Buckeye state is rich in musical content both from an historical perspective and in the present. Students will embark on a cultural journey as they chart a path through Ohio’s diverse regions, cities and bordering states. Along the way they will explore the unique cultural contributions of Ohio citizens and take an inventory of physical and climatic characteristics using maps, photos, literature, satellite imagery and other multi-media resources.
3. View Musical Geography of America - This session focuses on the geography and people of the United States. America has a rich tradition of music making throughout its history and in contemporary times. Students will embark on a cultural journey as they chart a path through the states, regions and borders of our great country. Along the way they will explore the unique cultural contributions of Americans and take an inventory of physical and climatic characteristics using maps, photos, literature, satellite imagery and other multi-media resources.
4. View Musical Geography of the World - This session focuses on the geography and people of Europe, Asia and Africa. Music is a constant in every era and civilization. Students will open a “musical roadmap” as they embark on a cultural journey and travel to the countries and cities of Europe, Asia and Africa. Along the way they will explore the unique cultural contributions of people of each region and take an inventory of physical, economic and climatic characteristics using maps, photos, satellite imagery, literature and other multi-media resources.
5. View Creative Imagination - This class will inspire the imagination through music to explore the process of creating in writing, art, theater and music. Students will be instructed on how to access their imagination and use their discoveries to create a piece of art, of their choosing.
6. View KeyBank Math and Music - Math and Music is an exciting example of project-based learning. In a series of two videoconferences, students become the producers of a major musical event. Participants must utilize problem-solving skills relating to fractions, decimals, ratios and spatial geometry.
7. View Percussion Summit - Drumming is one of the oldest ways to communicate, celebrate and express human emotions. This program will examine the role of drummers and drumming in both African and American communities, emphasizing collaboration, cooperation and communication.
8. View Science of Sound - Science of Sound focuses on specific middle school level academic content standards in science including sound waves, transformation of energy, and hearing protection. In a series of three videoconferences, students explore sound through observing, recording data, predicting, hypothesizing and experimenting.
9. View Evolution and Revolution - Evolution and Revolution examines the process of change - political, economic, and personal – through the study of great historical events such as the French and Russian revolutions and their relationship with music and culture. History comes alive in this series of three videoconferences (also available as single sessions), which feature live music and interactive activities with students. This unit addresses specific academic content standards for world history.
10. View The Jazz Age - The Jazz Age is an exploration of American music and culture from the early part of the 20th century. Ragtime, Blues and early Jazz music are examined through hands on and ears on activities. This session works best when it is utilized to complement the reading of The Great Gatsby or other American novels of the 1920's.
11. View Langston Huges: A Legacy of Words and Ideas - Langston Hughes is a significant figure in poetry, drama, and music. This program explores his sincere portrayal of black life in America as well as his stylistic influence on the literary and performing arts.
12. View Unity and Diversity - Unity and Diversity explores the connection between English literary composition and musical composition. In a series of three videoconferences, students examine the elements of high quality writing and music by composing essays and simple music compositions. This unit addresses specific academic content standards for writing.
13. View Careers in Music - Career opportunities in the music industry are surprisingly plentiful and diverse. This program provides a complete overview on what to expect and how to prepare for careers in music performance, music education, music therapy, recording engineering and arts management.
14. View Quarterly Composer Spotlight - This program will address a different composer or performer of classical or popular music each quarter. Each session will include a biographical overview, musical performances, and commentary about the historical significance of the subject. 15. View Dalcroze Eurhythmics - Eurhythmics provides training in the basic elements of music through movement, singing and music notation. This program is available as either a single videoconference or a multi-session course.
16. View Let's Go to the Show - Students experience the thrill of singing and dancing in a show as they learn some basic elements of music, musical theater and opera.
17. View Introduction to Musical Instruments and Concepts - In a series of three videoconferences, musical instruments are introduced through faculty performances and student participation. Basic elements of musical form and style are explored through dynamic hands-on and ears-on activities. The series culminates in a student performance of their arrangement of music for a story.
18. View Meet the Young Artists - Talented young artists present brief performances and talk about their motivation, inspiration, and how their intense musical training affects their teenage lives. Ample time is set aside for open dialogue between the young artists and students.
19. View Music Theory Topics - This course provides rigorous instruction in music theory skills, including keyboard harmony, part writing, ear training and sight singing. This program is available as either a single videoconference or a multi-session course.
20. View Welcome to the Opera - Welcome to the Opera provides an entertaining introduction to the operatic art. The presenter discusses singing styles, theatrical issues and the role of music.
21. View Music Master Class - Master Class sessions offer advanced musical instrument coaching by expert CIM faculty members to prepare for performances and auditions. This lively interactive videoconference connection is also available over the Internet2 high-speed network.
22. View String Orchestra Coaching - This session offers specialized music coaching for entire ensembles or various instrument sections and chamber music ensembles. Musical interactions with skilled CIM faculty members help music ensembles prepare for performances and contests.

27. View Introduction to 19th Century Music - This session provides an overview of historical events of the 19th century and how they influenced the music of the time. Students will discover why this century is often referred to as the "Romantic Era."
28. View Introduction to Impressionism - This session provides an overview of French music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and its relationship to poetry and painting. Students will learn how the musical language of Debussy and Ravel changed the course of music and influenced generations of composers.
29. View Introduction to 20th Century Music - This session provides an overview of historical events of the 20th century and how they influenced the music of the time. Students will explore the eclectic and sometimes shocking music of the past century.
30. View Interactive Videoconferencing: Everything You Need to Know - This class includes two an in-depth sessions that examine teaching and content development in the interactive videoconference medium. Issues of student engagement, technology integration and content development are addressed in a highly participatory format.
31. View Videoconferencing with Internet Protocol: A Best Practice Guide - This session is a thorough overview of the practical considerations involved in assuring a successful, high quality videoconferencing connection using Internet Protocol (H.323) networking.
32. View Integrating Music in the Academic Curriculum - The study of music provides a unique way for students to experience and understand their environment and reinforces the learning skills needed for students to become successful at school and beyond. This session leads teachers through a step-by-step process of how to utilize music across the academic curriculum.
