1.  View   Great Lakes Native Peoples - Led by a Cranbrook anthropologist, this 45-minute program illustrates the different strategies used by past Native Americans of the Great Lakes region to meet basic needs of clothing, shelter, food and transportation. Activities include map exercises that introduce the "Three Fires" culture in Michigan. Interesting role-playing scenarios involving full class participation and interaction explore the impact of native peoples on European settlers and the development of a barter economy and democratic government.
2.  View   Bats of the World - Step into the world of bats with a cultural, geographic perspective. Led by a bat researcher from the Organization for Bat Conservation, this exciting multimedia program features live insectivorous bats, vampire bats, and fruit bats with 3-foot wingspans. Topics address sound waves, ecosystems, food webs and conservation. Includes kit with interactive activities on constructing a simplified model of the wing structure of a bat and estimating and measuring wingspans of a microbat and a megabat. Kit also includes a full color poster of a bat to hang in the classroom.
3.  View   Ice Age - Much of the North American continent was once covered in ice thousands of feet thick. Mile-thick glaciers, in particular, scoured the Great Lakes region. This 45-minute program explores the world of the Ice Age and investigates the scars and evidence of that remarkable past in the landscape that surrounds the Great Lakes region, today. Led by a Cranbrook geologist, a series of activities provide insight into Earth processes. Includes kits with geologic surface maps and a suite of rocks typical of Ice Age landforms.
4.  View   Galileo's Workshop - Using scientific methods developed by Galileo himself, recreate Galileo’s incline plane experiment and discover the secrets of gravity. Students will use the scientific method and explore science-writing skills as they experiment with gravity. Kit includes 10 stopwatches, 10 inclined planes and 15 marbles. Calculators are required and can be purchased seperately.
5.  View   Faculty Presentation - Introduce your faculty and staff to videoconferencing with the Institute with a sample of the science programming offered by our Natural History museum.
6.  View   Scientific Paper Writing Workshop - Explore the formats scientists use to communicate their discoveries through scientific invenstgation.
7.  View   Watershed Ecology - Study your school's watershed using maps and other scientific tools. Studens will gain appreciation for nature and our most precious resource, water, through this investigative program.
