The Discovery Center currently offers 16 classes, developed to support the Missouri Frameworks for Curriculum Development in Science and National Science Standards. The Discovery Center’s electronic fieldtrips invite your class to have a hands-on lesson taught by a science specialist with hands-on materials sent to you. The class comes with a curriculum containing background information, pre and post labs, and links to websites of special interest. These educational units blend hands-on fun with science education for a memorable videoconferencing adventure. Please visit our website at www.discoverycenter.org for more information and to reserve a program. Programs are done on demand basis.
Provider's Events:
1. View Bon Appetit - Students trace the path of the digestive system and explore macronutrient (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) chemistry through interactive kitchen-chemistry experiments.
2. View Bridging Forces - Students design structures, examine different forces, and demonstrate the concepts of balanced and unbalanced forces. Center of gravity and compression and tension forces are used in student constructions. Strong emphasis on scientific inquiry.
3. View Chemistry Capers - Students perform tasks that show physical and chemical changes, investigate and design chemical reactions, and describe evidence that chemical changes have occurred.
4. View Ecology Exploration - Students illustrate biodiversity and apply knowledge of food chains, niches in ecosystems, and components of habitats. Activities include unique manipulatives, group connections, and physical activity.
5. View The Gene Scene - Students investigate cell processes and genetics using innovative DNA activities developed by the National Human Genome Research Institute. DNA- see it, build it, touch it!
6. View Initial Incision - Basic heart anatomy is introduced to students via dissection. Other program elements include the effects of exercise and nutrition on cardiovascular health. Extra supply fees may apply.
7. View Magnet Mania - Students observe magnetism, explain properties of magnetic forces, and relate these properties to the Earth's magnetic field by demonstration. Students will investigate the Maglev Train technology, create an electromagnet, and develop a compass in their investigations.
8. View To the Moon and Beyond - What goes up must come down, or does it? Take a look at the different effects of gravity here on earth and in space. Compare and contrast characteristics of the planets in our solar system.
9. View Simply Marvelous Machines - Simple machines simply make work easier by directing forces over distances. The Work equation W=F x D will be emphasized. Students will do hands-on activities with levers, pulleys and inclined planes. and review wheels & axles and gears.
10. View Faculty Presentation - Introduce your faculty and staff to the world of video conferencing. We will provide you with a sample of the Science programming that the Discovery Center has to offer followed by a question and answer session.
11. View Animal Awareness - (Presented in partnership with the Dickerson Park Zoo) Learn about the characteristics of mammals, birds, and reptiles, as modeled by live zoo animals. Similarities and differences will be highlighted. Program availablity limited by Zoo schedules. Available Monday-Thursday 8:00-5:00 Central time, September 1-June 1.
12. View All About Mammals! - (Presented in partnership with the Dickerson Park Zoo) Learn about an animal family by meeting some of the zoo's live mammals! Program availability based on Zoo schedules. Available Monday-Thursday 8:00-5:00 central time, September 1-June 1.
13. View Jump into Japan - Learn how geography and topography influences population distribution, economics, and the culture of Japan. Through geographic principles we will explore the diversity of the country and the misconceptions of a culture so different from our own.
14. View All about Birds! - (Presented in partnership with the Dickerson Park Zoo) Learn about an animal family by meeting some of the zoo's live birds. Program availability based on Zoo schedules. Available Monday-Thursday 8:00-5:00 central time, September 1-June 1.
15. View All About Reptiles! - (Presented in partnership with the Dickerson Park Zoo) Learn about an animal family by meeting some of the zoo's live reptiles!
Available Monday-Thursday 8:00-5:00 Central Time, September 1-June 1.
16. View Native American Use of the Bison - Lewis and Clark encountered millions of bison on their trek up the Missouri River.
